Hour of Code and Computer Science Week, Hawaii Style!

This month's Google Rocks! Hawaii hangout on #hourofcode was so inspiring! +Shane Asselstine hosted, and several teachers shared what their schools did during Computer Science Week, Dec. 8 - 14.

The #hourofcode events highlighted in the slide show below are the tip of the iceberg. Hour of Code registered 338 events for Hawaii this year! See the list here.

Each school participated in #hourofcode in ways unique to their community. #socool

Two events stood out for hangout panelists because they were evening events that reached out to parents and the public.

Hale Kula Elementary's Family Night (slide #6),

and Momilani Elementary's Everyone Can Code event (slide #3).

Here's the entire broadcast, with details on the various events. Note the panelists' sparkle as they describe #hourofcode and related events at their school, and their fervor as they discuss their hopes for the future of coding in the curriculum.

Grab a cuppa and have a look and listen ...

A big MAHALO for sharing to host +Shane Asselstine of Momilani Elementary (slide #3), and panelists +Michael Fricano II of 'Iolani (slide #7), Celeste Endo of Queen Kaahumanu Elementary (slides #5 and #8), +Melissa Handy of LeJardin Academy, Melanie Ching of Wai'Alae Elementary Public Charter School, and Roberta Hodara of Seabury Hall (slide #4).

More sharing, please ... :)

The #CEOct Global Kickoff, Hawaii Style -- 3 Takeaways

Our mission for the #CEOct Global Kickoff October 1, 8-9 pm, around the world? -- To share our personal journeys to becoming connected educators.

+Shane Asselstine, +Michelle Carlson Colte, +Michael Fricano II, and I represented the many connected educators in Hawaii for this world-wide event.

These are my takeaways from the experience:

1. We are all unique, but the same. Different journeys, same passion. #heartfilling
► Linda's story
► Shane's story
► Michelle's story
► Michael's story

2. There is always something new to learn. Look for it!

Michelle, who firmly believes in giving students a voice, shared a neat project: students recording Minecraft tips on FlipGrid.

Listen about it HERE. Isn't that the coolest idea?

3. Connecting with passionate educators feeds the spirit. #nuffsaid

Here's the show in its entirety.

Mahalo to my #GTANY friend +Regina Schaffer for the opportunity, and to the organizers of the #CEOct Global Kickoff: +Tammy Neil, +Sarah Thomas, and +Jessica Raleigh.

October is Connected Educators Month and there are so many activities to choose from to feed your spirit. Check out the schedule HERE.

A Combo Twitter & Hangout Chat on Project Based Learning Coming Soon

Something new is happening this month with #edchatHI, the monthly educational Twitter chat for Hawaii.

Ta-dahhh! -- it's a combination Twitter and Google hangout chat!

The topic? Project-based learning.

Here are the questions to ponder:

Q1: What is PBL?
Q2: Why go PBL?
Q3: How do you roll out PBL to your teachers?
Q4: What barriers do you anticipate?
Q5: How will you measure the success of your PBL program?
Q6: What are some PBL resources, PBL practitioners to follow?
Resources to check out before the chat?
How School Leaders Set the Stage for PBL Success by Suzie Boss
PBL Planning via Edutopia (½ way down page are PBL videos)
Special guests on the hangout will be Buffy Cushman-Patz (@buffycushman) and Nate Malinoski (@NateMalinoski), two educators who have a lot of experience with project-based learning.

You can view the hangout, and ask questions live, here.

Or you can watch the hangout and tweet away using the #edchatHI hashtag on Twitter.
Or you can do both. ☺

When will all of this happen?

Mark your calendars: September 14, 2015 at 6 - 7 pm Hawaii Standard Time.

Please join us!

Special mahalo to +Michael Fricano II, +JoAnn Jacobs, and +Michelle Carlson Colte for setting up this special event.

P. S. Wow! I can't believe I haven't posted here in over a month! Yes, getting ready for the start of school did take up a lot of my time. Happy to report that we're up and running and settling in nicely. Hope to be blogging more regularly now. I have lots to share, as usual.

Hour of Code in Hawaii's Classrooms -- So inspiring!

It's so inspiring to learn about how schools in Hawaii are participating in coding activities, not only during Hour of Code Week December 8-14, 2014, but throughout the school year!

So far, we've done two Google Rocks! Hawaii hangouts to celebrate Hour of Code in Hawaii, and, who knows, there may be more!

Teachers +Shane Asselstine of Momilani Elementary (21:58), +Steve Qunell of Iao Intermediate (33:14), and +Rachel Armstrong of Hale Kula Elementary (07:42) joined us for the first hangout in December, with K5 Affiliate Trainer for Hawaii +Evelyn Zayas (02:21) briefing us about code.org.

A Big Mahalo to all of these innovative Hawaii teachers who agreed to come on our weekly hangout to share about coding at their school.

Might there be another Hour of Code, Hawaii Style show in our Google Rocks! Hawaii hangout future to learn about how other Hawaii schools are coding? Now that would be fabulous! Please contact me or Michelle, or we may be contacting you. :)

Happy coding!

7 Delightfully Surprising Things That Happened at the Second Google for Education Hawaii Summit (updated 5/21/14)

Google selfie with +Molly Schroeder and +Wendy Gorton (IC)

Yes, +EdTechTeam's Second Google for Education Hawaii Summit was FUN!

Seven delightfully surprising things happened:

1. I learned about how education can and should be 'uncomfortably exciting'.

This is a new phrase I learned from Googler (and former Hawaii resident) +Evan Rapoport, via +Larry Page. I think I'm going to use it. Wouldn't it be fantastic if we could get our students uncomfortably excited about learning?

Evan Rapoport

2. The majority of the attendees were public school teachers.

I was thrilled to find out that the majority of the 500+ people who attended the summit were public school teachers. Shout-out to all of these educators wanting to make a difference in their schools! Attendance almost doubled from last year's summit.

+Brendan Brennan commented that he would like to see 1000+ next year. Now wouldn't that be something?

Hale Kula Elementary School represents!
IC: +Wendy Gorton

3. Internet was unthrottled.

The wi-fi was smooooooooooth and blazing fast at 'Iolani School! A big mahalo to Jim Crum and his crew for an outstanding job. Here's a great article about Jim in the 'Iolani student newspaper: The IT man: Jim Crum hopes to boost information technology at 'Iolani. I hope next year's summit will be at 'Iolani again.

4. Some of my #pln friends were different.

It was so much fun to meet members of my #pln in person! +Brendan Brennan and +Lisa Nagamine are much taller than I imagined, and based on +Rachel Armstrong's wonderfully strong voice on hangouts, I expected her to be less petite than she is.

5. Jim Sill was FUNNY!  --- in a good way :D

Humor is so important for engaging students I think, and Jim, also known as Mr. Sill, made us laugh often. I love how Mr. Sill weaves his filmmaking skills into his presentations, too.

And his Sillfie Fun! page is pretty awesome. #sillfie / #selfie, get it?

6. Three Hawaii Google Certified Teachers gathered together in one room to learn from each other.

GCT +Liz Castillo from the Google Teacher Academy 2012 Mountain View cohort  and +Michelle Carlson Colte from the 2013 Sydney cohort attended my Curate and Organize Like a Ninja, in Chrome session. I was so thankful for their support.

7. I went away to meet up with someone from home.

Well, this isn't surprising, is it? It was great to catch up with technology coordinator +Larry McCarty and I'ao Intermediate technology teacher +Pete Hansen (in the back). Lots of good discussion going on here. :)

IC +Peter Henrie

What did I learn that our faculty and students can use?

My Hawaii colleagues and I discussed what we learned at the Summit on our weekly Google Rocks! Hawaii Hangout-on-Air:

And, I wrote a blog post:

2 Hawaii Administrators, on GAFE in their schools ... and a sneak peek at next week's Google Rocks! Hawaii HOA

Two different approaches to administering Google Apps for Education in a school -- both effective!

Jan Iwase, principal of Hale Kula Elementary School located at Schofield Barracks, O'ahu, has dived right in with student projects. Lisa Nagamine, principal of Moanalua Middle School located near Honolulu, is training her teachers thoroughly first.

Mahalo to Chad Nacapuy for suggesting that we bring these two progressive, connected educators on Google Rocks! Hawaii HOA.

In addition to Jan, Lisa, and Chad, these Hawaii teachers rounded out the panel: Jody Brown, Michelle Colte, Michael Fricano II, Holly Gates, Barbara Potts, Anne Torige, and myself. It was a full house!

I had asked Jan and Lisa to outline what they planned to share. The document they produced is full of great information for schools going GAFE: Two Administrators, on GAFE at their school.

Loved Lisa's poster!

The four stages of 'Changing Instructional Behavior'. --Bercgroup

Here's the hangout. I think you will be impressed by Jan and Lisa's passion. They are superb examples of what's right in education. Their students are truly fortunate.

Enjoy!

◊ ◊ ◊ ◊ ◊

Next week, we'll be recommending Google+ Communities that we think our Hawaii (and other) teachers will enjoy as they build their PLN (Personal Learning Network).

I can't wait and I'm going to start the sharing right here and now, with a lollapalooza of a community:

Connected Classrooms Workshop

Google just announced it on Monday, November 4 and the community is electric with teachers eager to connect. I was thrilled beyond measure to learn that my Google Teacher Academy buddy Brent Catlett is a moderator.

The community's purpose according to Google?
We've created this Community to empower educators to collaborate with one another, share resources, develop best practices, and bring their big ideas to life through technology.

Please join us November 13 at 7:00pm HST for Google Rocks #13 Hawaii HOA: Google+ Communities for Educators.

The show will be available for viewing afterwards, and added to this YouTube playlist of the HOAs we've done so far: http://goo.gl/OFw1AE

Have fun connecting!
